Why IELTS Matters for Study Abroad

Almost every English-speaking university requires IELTS Academic for admission. Here are the typical score requirements:

CountryMinimum IELTS (Undergraduate)Minimum IELTS (Postgraduate)
Canada (SDS)6.0 (no band below 6.0)6.5-7.0
Australia6.0-6.56.5-7.0
UK6.0-6.56.5-7.5
USA6.0-6.56.5-7.0
Germany6.0 (for English programs)6.5

For Bangladeshi students, the most common weak areas are Writing and Speaking. Here's how to fix that.

Module 1: Listening (Target: 7.5+)

Listening is often the easiest module to improve quickly.

Common Mistakes by Bangladeshi Students:

  • Missing answers because of unfamiliar accents (especially Australian/Scottish)
  • Spelling errors on fill-in-the-blank questions
  • Not reading questions ahead of time

Tips:

1.Practice with BBC Radio 4 and ABC Australia podcasts daily — at least 30 minutes
2.Read the questions BEFORE the audio plays. You get 30 seconds — use every second.
3.Practice spelling — "accommodation" (double c, double m), "environment," "government"
4.Learn to recognize distractors — the speaker may say one thing, then correct themselves
5.Do Cambridge IELTS Practice Tests 15-19 — these are the closest to the real exam

Module 2: Reading (Target: 7.0+)

Common Mistakes:

  • Reading the entire passage before looking at questions (wastes time)
  • Not managing time — spending too long on one passage
  • Confusion with True/False/Not Given questions

Tips:

1.Skim first, then scan. Read the first and last sentence of each paragraph. Then go to the questions.
2.Time allocation: Passage 1 = 15 min, Passage 2 = 20 min, Passage 3 = 25 min
3.For True/False/Not Given: "Not Given" means the information is simply not in the passage. Don't infer or assume.
4.Build vocabulary daily — Learn 10 academic words per day from the Academic Word List (AWL)
5.Read The Economist, Scientific American, or National Geographic — IELTS passages come from similar sources

Module 3: Writing (Target: 6.5+)

This is where most Bangladeshi students struggle. The average Writing score in Bangladesh is 5.5-6.0.

Task 1 (Academic): Describe a chart/graph/diagram

  • Structure: Introduction (paraphrase the question) → Overview (2 key trends) → Details (2 paragraphs)
  • Do NOT give opinions — just describe what you see
  • Use variety: "increased sharply," "rose steadily," "remained stable," "declined marginally"
  • Write at least 150 words (aim for 170-180)

Task 2: Essay (250+ words)

  • Structure: Introduction → Body 1 → Body 2 → Conclusion
  • Spend 5 minutes planning before writing. This is the most important step.
  • Use the PEEL method: Point → Explanation → Example → Link back to the question
  • Common mistakes to avoid:

- Memorized templates (examiners can spot these — you'll score 5.0)

- Writing "In my humble opinion" or "Since time immemorial" (cliche)

- Not answering ALL parts of the question

- Going off-topic in body paragraphs

Grammar Focus for Bengali Speakers:

  • Articles (a/an/the) — Bengali doesn't use articles the same way. Practice these specifically.
  • Subject-verb agreement — "The number of students *has* increased" (not "have")
  • Prepositions — "interested *in*," "depends *on*," "apply *for*"

Module 4: Speaking (Target: 6.5+)

Common Issues for Bangladeshi Students:

  • Speaking too fast or too softly
  • Using memorized answers (examiners detect this immediately)
  • Limited vocabulary range
  • Grammatical errors with tenses

Tips:

1.Part 1 (4-5 minutes): Give 2-3 sentence answers. Not one word, not a paragraph.
2.Part 2 (Cue Card): You get 1 minute to prepare. USE IT. Write bullet points on the paper provided. Speak for the full 2 minutes.
3.Part 3 (Discussion): This is where you can score high. Give opinions with reasons and examples.
4.Record yourself daily and listen back. You'll notice your own mistakes.
5.Practice with a study partner — if you don't have one, use AI tools to practice conversation.

3-Month Study Plan
